You Can Do a Lot in a Year
Medium’s flagship publication celebrates its first anniversary
Dear reader,
Today’s a big day! It officially marks one year of OneZero, Medium’s flagship publication.
Last year, we introduced ourselves to the world with major stories about content moderation, designer babies, a sketchy math video game, deepfakes, and more. (And when I say “more,” I mean, a story that rigorously questioned the very nature of reality. You know, that kind of thing.) If you missed these stories, I invite you to look back: they hold up.
Since last February, we’ve published well over 1,000 stories, breaking news and making sense of the future for millions of readers. In fact, in the last year alone, OneZero…
- Published exclusive investigations into facial recognition networks shopped out to police and government agencies around the world, most recently with a widely cited report on NEC.
- Took readers inside Amazon with a landmark series, The Amazon Diaries.
- Found justice for a small town in New York’s Fruit Belt that had lost its identity on vital web services like Google Maps thanks to the careless practices of online data brokers.
- Got Apple to open up about the end of life for AirPods, one of its core products.
- Tracked down the hidden supply chain for Amazon’s massively popular line of AA batteries.
- Explored what it means to be Black in the Time of Climate Change.
- Detailed one of the most successful algorithms in Silicon Valley. (Hint: It’s not Facebook’s.)
- Traveled to Kenya for a profile on Deep Learning Indaba, a conference bringing together hundreds of researchers from more than 40 African countries.
- Probed a hidden corner of the autonomous vehicle boom that’s way ahead of Tesla.
- Presented salary data from activist workers at Microsoft, opening a vital conversation about pay transparency in tech.
- Pulled the curtain back on Ambrosia, a controversial blood transfusion startup that snuck back into business after an FDA notice.
- Told the unbelievable true story about the influencer and the hit man. (#DoItForState)
- Revealed, at last, the people behind wikiHow’s anarchic artwork.
OneZero is excited to continue this work in 2020, serving you with important stories about technology and science — all without the ads or commerce links you may see in other outlets.
We can’t wait to show you what we have in store. The future’s looking bright.
Thank you for being here,
Editor in Chief, OneZero
