Five years ago, I was standing with Jim Dalrymple of The Loop at the Palo Alto Apple Store when the Apple Watch first went on sale. At the door was a crowd of people, lined up for hours around the block. Most of them had seen the original product announcement the September before, when Tim Cook took the stage at the historic Flint Center in Cupertino for his first big One More Thing. And again in March 2015, at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. Many had even come to the try-ons, where they could see the different casing and band collections.
When the store opened, Jim and I watched everyone watching the watches. Until Tim Cook appeared and asked us which Apple Watch bands were our favorites.
The Apple Watch has flaws and limitations, I know. I’ve spent the better part of the past five years and countless reviews pointing out those flaws and limitations. But the Apple Watch is also the absolute most important device Apple has ever made.
