Coronavirus fact check
Dear OneZero readers,
These are not easy times. But they’re made even harder by the flow of misinformation on social media, which can stoke undue panic or simply confuse.
Breathe: You got this. There’s a simple method summed up with the acronym SIFT that can help you vet any claims before you spread them to others with a retweet or Facebook post.
- Stop.
- Investigate the source.
- Find better coverage.
- Trace claims, quotes, and media to the original context.
All of this is explained in greater detail in a recent story by OneZero senior writer Will Oremus. He spoke to the man who developed the method, Washington State University digital literacy expert Mike Caulfield, and explains why you’ll want to use it.
