Would you pay $5,000 for a laptop? Apple is betting that some of us will. The company unveiled its new MacBook Pros on Monday, and the starting price is a whopping $1,999. With some customization, you can easily work your way up to double that number — or even more.

At this point, Apple knows it can set pricing at the high bound of reasonability and still hit its sales targets. We, its customers, go through the same cycle with each release: sticker shock, desire, negotiation, purchase. It’s like the five stages of grieving, but a process that always seems to end with us paying Apple.

With a global chip shortage underway, the pricing may even be a calculated risk by Apple. Even if it’s unable to produce as many laptops as it hopes, it will still clean up. Tim Cook’s specialty, after all, is squeezing the absolute most out of Apple’s assets.
